Should hijab be a fashion? should there be such thing as fashionable hijab, or fashion for hijabs? There are many styles for hijab, and many women search for hijab styles and latest hijab fashion. But what is hijab? lets take a look.
Qur’ān Sura 24:31:
"And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear thereof; that they should draw their veils over their bosoms and not display their beauty except to their husbands, their fathers, their husband's fathers, their sons, their husbands' sons, their brothers or their brothers' sons, or their sisters' sons, or their women, or the slaves whom their right hands possess, or male servants free of physical needs, or small children who have no sense of the shame of sex; and that they should not strike their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden ornaments. And O ye Believers! turn ye all together towards Allah, that ye may attain Bliss."
From this ayah and surah, we see that hijab is not only MODESTY, but also a reminder that one "MUST NOT JUST DRESS MODESTLY BUT BEHAVE MODESTLY"
So now lets take a look at the latest hijab fashions around the world, and see if the word 'modest' still applies. The debate here is whether one can wear a hijab as fashion, or wear the hijab fashionably and still dress modestly. Another question is, should one care about hijab fashion if the heart of wearing a hijab is to be modest and not to beautify, look attractive or care about looks out in public.
So, taking a look at the 2013 hijab fashion, or latest fashion in hijab, we can see so many styles of hijab. You have bright hijabs, colourful hijabs, textured and patterned hijabs, long hijabs, short hijabs, even see through and mesh style hijabs! (missing the point of hijab completely here!) . There are different shape hijabs, some rectangle; allowing a 'wrap round' hijab fashion and style, or the hijabs that are folded into a triangle shape. The triangle shape hijabs are becoming less fashionable, as they are simple and women feel they cannot stylize these hijabs very well. Some people use under layer hijabs or bandanna's to create another hijab fashion, which is a much liked style and shared all over the world. The hijabs that allow a 'wrap round' fashion is becoming the trend, with many using it to apply several styles and hijab fashions. Some women even accessories their hijab by applying beautiful clips and pins, whilst others even use headbands! If one pays too much attention to their style of hijab and hijab fashion, isn't it wasting unneeded time? Isn't it caring for the way you are perceived and look to the outside world? making you stand out a bit too much? Ask yourself is there a difference between me using my hijab as a fashion, a style , and accessory - and those who style their hair with sprays and straighteners before going out.
Of course there is a balance.
Look presentable, smart, neat, organised and clean. Look approachable and display the right image of a muslim woman and a muslimah. Wear your hijab modestly. Wear it with pride in your hijab and beliefs. Wear your hijab not only on your head but your body and heart. It is a reminder for you. A reminder of who you are, what you believe in, what you reflect. A reminder that you are different to other individuals in this world, your aims and your destination are different. If you focus on your modest hijab and are aware of it, it will always keep you in check and in line and by Allahs grace-keep you guided on the right path. Learn to love your hijab for what it is, not for its colours, hijab style and hijab fashion.
If you try to adorn your hijab too much, it will also encourage you to adorn your body and face. Next you will start applying makeup, because 'a gorgeous looking hijab must be matched with a well made up face, and stylish and fashionable wardrobe too'.
The camel hump hijab styles are out, especially popular with the 'khaleeji' women. This has already been mentioned by the prophet peace be upon him. The Prophet (صلى الله عليه وسلم) stated in a sahih hadith from Muslim:
“There are two types of the people of Hell whom I have not seen: men in whose hands are whips like the tails of cattle, with which they beat the people, and women who are clothed yet naked, maa’ilaat mumeelaat, with their heads like the humps of camels, tilted to one side. They will not enter Paradise nor even smell its fragrance.”
This is a stern warning to beware of the things referred to.
With regard to the phrase, “They will not enter Paradise nor even smell its fragrance,” this is a stern warning; it does not necessarily mean that they are kaafirs or that they will abide in Hell forever, like other sinners who die as Muslims; rather what is meant is that they and other sinners are threatened with Hell for their sins, but they are subject to the will of Allaah. If He wills He will forgive them and if He will He will punish them. This is like the verse in which Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“Verily, Allaah forgives not that partners should be set up with Him (in worship), but He forgives except that (anything else) to whom He wills”
Stylizing and following hijab fashions- or atleast the extreme fashions, must remember it is a form of Tabarruj which is not only contradictory to the rules of hijab but also a destructive sin in the Sight of Allah swt.
Sadly, we see the same pattern in the 'jilbab' or the 'abaya'. Wear can we find a simple abaya/jilbab these days?!
Remmeber my dear sister, you will a mother one day and an example to your children. Be the best example in sha Allah!
Be simple. Be pure. Be modest.
**This post is not meant as a judgement on any sister or her intentions for wearing the hijab but insha’Allah is a reminder as many of us are not aware of the gravity of such fashions and the affect it could have on our akhira. Also intention is important in this, Allah swt knows best. Allah yerbarikfeekom akhawaat <3 **
